Document retention policies and procedures in an electronic environment present special challenges for the corporate information officer.  VSB Professors J.C. Sipior and B.T. Ward together with co-author L. Volonino discuss a new Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and how it affects electronically stored information for compliance with  record keeping requirements imposed by tax, employment, health and safety, immigration and financial and commercial law.  To get the details read Managing the lifecycle of electronically stored information   in the Summer 2007 issue of Information Systems Management.

Do university research and development budgets trickle out to their surrounding communities in the form of new firm formation and attendant growth in employment?  VSB Professor S. L. Newbert along with co-authors B. Kirchhoff, I. Hasan and C. Armington found that geography does matter.  Their article The Influence of University R & D Expenditures on New Business Formations and Employment Growth describes how they used Census data and National Science Foundation data to test the hypotheses that new firm births are correlated with university R &D and that employment growth is linked to new firm formation.

Headlines about the trials and tribulations of Ford Motor company’s turnaround efforts and the recent speculation as to whether Yahoo has really embarked on a turnaround effort or is just shaking things up  due to lagging financial and technological performance suggest that the need for intelligent approaches to turnaround management isn’t limited to one sector of the economy.  VSB’s John A. Pearce II’s recent article on The Value of Corporate Financial Measures in Monitoring Downturn and Managing Turnaround:  An Exploratory Study offers an interesting look at how financial ratios of liquidity, activity and leverage  at each stage of the turnaround process may be reliable indicators of which firm’s efforts will meet with success.  Managers can use this insight to ascertain which phase of a turnaround they are in and reinforces the need to focus on fundamentals as operating efficiency was found to be critical for the duration of the turnarounds sampled.

Cultural norms and legal restrictions in foreign countries have circumscribed the use of comparative advertising found to be very efficacious in the United States. In the article Can Comparative Advertising be Effective in Germany?  A Tale of Two Campaigns, VSB’s  Professor of Marketing Raymond Taylor with his colleagues surveyed reactions to a price comparative campaign in the German telecommunications market and emotive comparative advertisement in the automobile industry.  Their findings support the theory that in Germany comparative advertising is not likely to suffer from cultural bias and that the strongest basis for comparative advertising is reasoned action.
